Selby Cricket Club held their Annual Dinner and Presentation night last Saturday at Selby Bowling Club where members and guests enjoyed a superb meal and MC Neil Darley looked back on a successful season on and off the pitch and all the captains, umpires, scorers and hard working people behind the scenes and the club sponsors were thanked. Before events got underway the club remembered a longstanding club member Peter Burrans, who sadly passed away recently.
The Midweek team had another good season in the Snaith Evening League with Matty Clark picking up the batting award with197 runs at an average of 65.67. Harvey Johnson won the bowling trophy with 11 wickets at 7.36. The player of the year was Joe Bugg who played in every game and contributing with the bat and ball and in the field.
Last season saw the revival of the fourth team thanks to good work from Dan McLoughlin who was at the helm of the reformed side. They finished ninth in Division Two of the York Vale League and also reached the final of the Scothern Construction Cup. Ben White hit 165 runs, including a century at Thorpe Willoughby, young player Stan Bugg scored 183 runs, but the winner with 309 runs at an average of 34.33 was Iwan White. In the bowling department Jawad Sharizad took 13 wickets and Senitha Ruhunuge 12 wickets but the winner was Seth Wratten who improved no end as the season progressed and he took 18 wickets at an average of 11.17. The fourth team player of the year went to Senitha Ruhunuge who excelled in his first season at the club claiming 13 wickets and hitting 158 runs.
The third team had a great campaign losing only one game all season in Division One which earned them the league title. They comfortably secured back to back league titles and ensured Selby were the winners of the last ever York Vale League Saturday format. The third team will be playing in Division Four (Ebor) of the Yorkshire Premier League North next season. Neil Darley hit 199 runs and Isaac Leung 227 runs and skipper Steve Sherwood topped the run scoring charts with 319 runs. The winner of the batting award with 265 runs at an average of 66.25 was Mark Hope. In the bowling department Nathan Dye claimed 16 wickets and Mark Hope 23 wickets but the winner of the bowling award was Neil Darley who took 25 wickets at an average of 10.28. The third team player of the year award went to Steve Sherwood who contributed heavily with the bat and led the side superbly helping to develop several junior players to help the side to back to back league titles.
The second team claimed 13 wins to secure fifth place in a very competitive Division Three Ebor with plenty of good performances and this helped secure promotion to Division Two Ebor for next season. Graham Phillips topped the run scoring charts with 446 runs and there were useful contributions from Luke Berzins 221, Zac Buttle 185, and Mike Lane 181. The batting trophy went to Kayden Lane who scored 275 runs at an average of 32.38. Kayden Lane and Luke Berzins both claimed 23 wickets each and spinner Alex Langhan took 30 wickets at an average of 17.23. The winner of the bowling award was Nathan Dye who took 22 wickets at an average of 9.41 and he also picked up the second team player of the year after a fantastic second half to the season. .
The first team picked up 10 wins in Division One West which earned them 126 points and a fifth place finish to secure promotion to the Championship West following the league re-structure. With the bat there were a number of batsmen who contributed, Rob Scarr scored 394 runs at an average of 32.83, Matthew Hoyle scored 568 runs, including a century against Clifton Alliance II, at an average of 37.87 but the winner of of the first team batting award with 505 runs at an average of 42.08 was Alex Bowden. In the bowling department there were more impressive performances with Tom Shepherd taking 21 wickets and Luke Berzins 19 wickets but the winner 35 wickets at an average of 12.83 was Lee Wild. The winner of the Rickaby Trophy for first team player of the year went to Alex Bowden who had another great season with the bat, he took some vital wickets and took over the captaincy in the second half of the season.
The most improved youth in senior cricket award went to George Wells who contributed over 20 wickets in senior cricket and had some great cameos with the bat and showed great promise for the future. The best youth in senior cricket was awarded to Kayden Lane who was instrumental in the success of the second team, scoring 275 runs and taking and taking 23 wickets. The most improved senior player award went to Nathan Dye who took 16 wickets for the third team which earned him a second team call up and his season went from strength to strength, claiming 22 wickets and contributing vital runs.
The club person of the year award went to Zac Buttle who made a real difference during the season, advertising the club and events across multiple channels which enhanced the profile of the club. He also organised key social events and brought a huge amount of positivity to the club.
Richard Singh presented Selby Cricket Club Treasurer Chelle Thirsk with the Selby Hands of Hope Community Person of the Year Award for 2024. This was for recognition for all Chelle’s hard work and the great relationship the club has with Richard and the Hands of Hope team.
