two wins on a damp afternoon

Yorkshire Premier League North Division Three West

Bilton in Ainsty II 144, Selby II 145-7

With the first team game called off at Sessay the main action turned to Sandhill Lane where the second team picked up a three wicket win over Bilton in Ainsty II

There was a delayed start due to rain and the game was reduced to 33 overs per team and skipper Gareth Harvey won the toss and asked the visitors to bat first. Selby made a good start with Luke Berzins making an early breakthrough when he bowled Jonathan Dixon in the third over. Berzins struck again to trap Johnny Cordingley leg before and when Kayden Lane had Tim Lambert caught behind by Gareth Harvey visitors were reduced to 25-3. Harry Smith and Tim Smith staged a good recovery and they added 67 for the fourth wicket before spinner Alex Langhan had Harry Smith (39) caught by Matty Clark. Langhan (4-36) bowled well as wickets began to tumble and Nathan Dye (2-10) eventually dismissed Tim Smith (42) as Bilton were bowled out for 144.

In reply the early part of the Selby innings revolved around opener Graham Phillips but wickets fell at the other end with Tim Lambert (3-36) keeping the visitors in the game. Phillips hit 7 fours and a six in his 42 before Lambert had him caught which left the home side on 73-4. Lambert then dismissed Kayden Lane to reduce Selby to 78-5 but the experienced Mike Lane was joined by Alex Hornostaj (11) and they added 28 for the sixth wicket. Graham Hutchison dismissed Nathan Dye to set up a tight finish but Lane (33*) and George Wells both batted sensibly and it was Wells (20*) who hit the winning runs in the 30th over.

The win lifts Selby up to seventh in the table and they travel to Leeds side Scholes on Saturday. The first team hopefully return to action on Saturday when Barwick in Elmet are the visitors to Sandhill Lane.

York Vale League Division One

Clifton Alliance IV 101, Selby III 103-3

Selby third team continue to top the Division One table after they beat the weather and visitors Clifton Alliance IV by seven wickets at Sandhill Lane.

There was a delayed start due to the rain with the game reduced to 25 overs per side and skipper Steve Sherwood once again won the vital toss and put the York side in to bat. Tight bowling from Stan Bugg and Jawad Sharizad (2-21) made run scoring difficult and they struggled to 39-2 with opener Tom Piercy holding the innings together. Charlie Taylor (14) hit a couple of big sixes but Spinner Mark Hope (3-27) kept Selby in control and Jack Hunter eventually dismissed Piercy who batted well for his 39. The visitors innings fizzled out with further wickets for Hunter (2-30) and Stan Bugg as Clifton were bowled out for 101 in the 25th over.

In reply Selby lost a wicket with the total on 22 when Tom Sherwood was bowled by Gianni Mavelli but Steve Sherwood and Mark Hope ensured there were no further problems with some solid batting in a second wicket partnership of 65. Hope (38*) eventually had to retire and spinner Matthew Bennett had Sherwood caught for 28. Bennett (2-13) took another wicket but Gareth Pearce hit the winning runs in the 16th over. Thanks go to match ball sponsor Simon Easthill and Selby travel to Pocklinbgton III on Saturday. The fourth team game on Sunday in Division Two was a victim of the weather and they are at home to Pocklington IV on Saturday.
