2023 season to get underway

The local cricket season gets underway on Saturday with Selby first team starting their season in the Yorkshire Premier League North Division Two (Ebor) when they travel to Woodhouse Grange III. A league reorganisation saw the top five from last season all promoted so Selby will hope to make a serious promotion push this season with Tom Shepherd taking over as skipper. There are some new teams in Division Two with Barwick in Elmet and Scarcroft both joining from the Wetherby League. There will also be several local derbies with Carlton Towers II, Church Fenton I and South Milford II along with promoted teams Drax and Burn, who have had a meteoric rise through the leagues in recent years.

Graham Phillips again skippers the second team in Division Four (Ebor) which will again be very competitive with several new teams mainly from the Wetherby League including Crossgates, Thorner, Scholes and Sherburn. Dunnington II have also joined the League after moving from the York Vale League. Selby start their season with a local derby against Cawood I at Escrick Park. For the next two seasons it is 3 up and 3 down between Divisions Three, Four and Five to help speed up teams reaching their correct position in the pyramid. Another change to the rules in Divisions Three, Four and Five is that the games are now 40 overs per side.

Selby third team start on Sunday in Division Three of the York Vale League when they travel to Bolton Percy III. They will be the usual mixture of youth and experience with Steve Sherwood taking over as skipper and they will hope to build on a much improved season last year.
