Two promotions

Yorkshire Premier League North Division One West

Selby I 228, Clifton Alliance II 131

Selby first team finished their season in Division One with a comfortable 97 run win at Clifton Alliance II which lifted them to a fifth place finish.

Batting first after winning the toss Selby were soon scoring quickly but they lost openers Matty Clark and Layton Hallam with the score on 29. Matt Hoyle and Alex Bowden then took the total to 40 but Watkinson (3-28) bowled Hoyle leaving Bowden to dominate the innings with another solid performance. There was good support for Bowden from Oliver Steward, Charlie Baird (18), Joe Bugg and Lee Wild. The visitors took control when the big hitting Harvey Johnson joined Bowden and they added 56 for the eighth wicket in quick time. Callum Hart ended the partnership when he had Bowden caught for a classy 74 and he later had Johnson caught behind for a rapid 40, which included 6 fours and 2 big sixes. The visitors were bowled out in the 41st over for 228 which was boosted by 54 extras.

In reply the York side made slow progress against some tight bowling from Tom Shepherd and Luke Berzins and it was Shepherd who made the first breakthrough when he bowled Alistair Wray in the fifth over. Two more wickets for Shepherd (3-32) saw the home side reduced to 26-3 and they never really recovered from the bad start. Opener Alex Morphet provided some serious resistance, but wickets fell at the other end with Berzins (1-30), Joe Bugg (2-20), Harvey Johnson (2-16) keeping Selby in command. Lee Wild joined the attack to bowl Morphet for a patient 50 and Alex Bowden wrapped up the game in the 36th over when he had Freddie Lancaster (23) caught by Luke Berzins to leave Clifton all out for 131. The formation of an ECB Premier Division 2 for next season has caused another league reorganization so Selby’s fifth place has earned them promotion to the Championship.

In Division Three Selby second team’s game against Thorp Arch II at Escrick Park was conceded by the visitors so the ten points means they also finished fifth which sees them promoted to Division Two.

Selby fourth team finished their season on Sunday in Division Two of the York Vale League when they travelled to Acomb III but only nine overs were possible before heavy rain ended proceedings with Selby on 39-4. The fourth team were also due to play Dunnington III in the final of the Scothern Cup but that was also abandoned with no play possible.
